The Pastor’s Porch                                                October 29, 2020

When I was packing, I came across a beloved volume of poems that my mom gave me. She got it when she was a young woman, so at this point it is quite old. I can’t even count the times I have read so many of the poems in this particular book. While glancing through, I came across one of my very favorite ones. It really describes the attitude I need to have as I continue to do the packing and moving to Florida. It also does a great job of helping all of us to keep going during a tough time in our community, our country, and in our world. May this poem bring a smile to your face, and may its  wisdom help you get through your day.

Keep A-Goin’.                                                          Frank Stanton

Ef you strike a thorn or rose,
    Keep a-goin'!
  Ef it hails, or ef it snows,
    Keep a-goin!
  'Taint no use to sit an' whine,
  When the fish ain't on yer line;
  Bait yer hook an' keep a-tryin'—
    Keep a-goin'!

  When the weather kills yer crop,
    Keep a-goin'!
  When you tumble from the top,
    Keep a-goin'!
  S'pose you're out of every dime,
  Bein' so ain't any crime;
  Tell the world you're feelin' prime
    Keep a-goin'!

  When it looks like all is up,
    Keep a-goin'!
  Drain the sweetness from the cup,
    Keep a-goin'!
  See the wild birds on the wing,
  Hear the bells that sweetly ring,
  When you feel like sighin' sing—
    Keep a-goin'!

Lord Jesus, please help us to keep going. Help us to never give up but always trust that You will give us what we need to accomplish Your purpose. Thank You for the gift of poetry. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Galatians 6:9-10

Let us not become weary in doing good,for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
