The Pastor's Porch
July 22, 2020

I remember being in a class once and doing a very unusual exercise.  The teacher showed us a marker, complete with cap.  You know, the fatter ones that make big lines.  Anyway, he asked us each to figure out what else it could be used to do.  There were eight of us in the group.  The marker was passed to each of us in turn.  Everyone came up with an idea.  We felt pretty good when all had accomplished the task.  The teacher then said, "Pass it around again!"  We each had to come up with another idea.  The third time we passed the marker was incredible.  Ideas were funny, creative, innovative.  I found out later that the "alternative use test for creativity" is a standard in psychology.  As I figure out how to do ministry in this unprecedented time, I become aware that many things will have to be accomplished in new, innovative ways.  Maybe you are finding that to be true in your life as well.  Perhaps taking the mandate to "pass it around again" can help us receive God's creative Spirit.  I am going to try it with a task today.  No matter what, it will be fun!
Lord Jesus, we forget sometimes that You are the Creator Who never stops creating.  Please help us to be open to unusual ideas that accomplish Your purposes.  Thank You, Lord.  Amen

Isaiah 43:18-19:  Do not remember the former things,
    or consider the things of old.
19 I am about to do a new thing;
    now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
    and rivers in the desert.
